Alibaba’s cloud computing division is transforming the transmission and consumption of Olympic content, marking a pivotal moment in sports broadcasting history.
On July 25, Alibaba Cloud, in partnership with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), launched OBS Cloud 3.0, an AI-enhanced platform set to become the primary content distribution method for the Paris Games. This innovation signifies the end of an era, as satellite broadcasting, a staple since the 1964 Tokyo Games, is replaced.
According to the South China Morning Post, OBS Cloud 3.0 offers media outlets unprecedented access to Olympic images and videos. As the official broadcasting arm of the Olympics, run by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), OBS ensures global coverage, allowing billions to watch the events.
This shift to cloud-based distribution is a historic first for the Olympics. Alibaba emphasized that “for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games,” a cloud platform will be the main content dissemination approach. This development aligns with the global rise of AI, led by innovations like OpenAI’s ChatGPT since October 2022.
AI technologies will enhance Olympic broadcasts beyond distribution. Alibaba plans to utilize its large language models to assist official commentators, providing more insightful and in-depth commentary for viewers.
Alibaba is not alone in introducing AI innovations at the Paris Olympics. Other tech companies are also contributing:
SenseTime, a Chinese AI startup, will support China’s men’s national basketball team with AI data analysis and strategic advice, aiming to give the team a competitive edge.
Intel and the IOC have developed an AI chatbot, AthleteGPT, to assist athletes in the Olympic Village with professional, logistical, and general inquiries, enhancing their experience with quick and precise information.
Google has partnered with NBCUniversal to showcase AI products, offering 3D maps of Olympic venues and an advanced information retrieval system, enriching the viewer experience.
A notable advancement is the delivery of the first-ever Olympic content in ultra-high definition, providing unparalleled image quality and vivid, visually pleasing footage, bringing athletes closer to viewers.
Selina Yuan, president of international business at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, expressed optimism about the collaboration with OBS, highlighting its potential to transform the viewing experience and demonstrate the relevance of advanced technology to a global audience.
The adoption of AI and cloud technology for the Paris Olympics reflects a broader trend in the sports industry, as the digital revolution reshapes event broadcasting, analysis, and experience. With AI’s rapid development, future Olympic Games may see even more advanced technologies enhancing training, performance analysis, and fan interaction.
